The world languages department offers elementary, intermediate and advanced courses in French, Spanish and German. Students must have two units of credit in the same foreign language to meet graduation requirements.  
 
Course: French I                                                   1 Term
Grades: 9, 10, 11                                                   1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
Students will learn the fundamental listening, speaking, reading and writing elements of the French language. Communication skills will be developed for interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes in present and future tense.  The cultures of French speaking areas will also be introduced. Emphasis in this area will include the study of cultural practices, products and perspectives.
 
Course: French II                                                1 Term

Students will continue to develop and reinforce their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing elements of the French language. Communication skills will be developed for interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes in past, present, and future tense.  Students will further study cultures of French speaking areas. Emphasis in this area will include the study of cultural practices, products and perspectives.
 
Course: Honors Advanced French                    1 Term

An opportunity for students to read, speak and write French effectively while developing an appreciation for the important aspects of the French system.  Social customs, cuisine, art, and music are discussed.  Emphasis is on grammar and syntax.  Students write dictations, descriptions, letters, conversations, summarize, translate short, recite poetry, and read short stories.  This course is approved for Honors points. Credit can be received for French III or French IV.
  
Course: Spanish I                                              1 Term
Grades: 9, 10, 11                                               1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
 
Instruction will be based on conversational Spanish through "Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling".  Rather than focus primarily on grammar, the TPRS method is a process of acquiring a second language compatible with how one’s native language is learned. Students must pass end of course exam to receive one credit unit.
 
 
Course: Spanish II                                            1 Term

Prerequisite: Spanish I
 
Spanish II reviews and continues the study of Spanish 1 via TPR and TPRS methodologies for greater vocabulary acquisition and fluency. Both methods are researched-based and compatible with how one’s native language is learned. Students will learn high-frequency vocabulary in an engaging and learner-friendly atmosphere. Students must pass end of course exam to receive one credit unit.

Advanced course work will include advanced grammatical study and introduction of literature from the target language culture. Vocabulary and fluency will continue to be expanded via TPRS. Students will read, discuss and write about current and historical events in target language countries. Courses will also focus on contextualized speaking circumstances to prepare students for travel and/or work experiences. This course is approved for Honors points. Credit can be received for Spanish III or Spanish IV.

This course provides an exciting introduction to the German language and culture. Conversational German and grammatical structure are emphasized with some attention to German Culture.

This course continues the discovery of the German people and their language. Conversation, reading, writing, and a more intense study of grammatical structures will be emphasized.
