The Business Technology Education Department is dedicated to providing students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous and relevant career and technical education program that leads to academic achievement, post-secondary education, leadership, and successful employment in a global economy.
 
Students can choose classes from three programs of study:
 
1. Business Management
Personal Finance is a graduation requirement for incoming freshman and is blocked with Financial Planning.
Course: Personal Finance                                  1 term

Personal Finance (1/2 credit with no pre-req) is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real world topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Students will design personal and household budgets; simulate use of checking and saving accounts; demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and credit management; and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions.

Financial Planning is a course designed to develop skills in the use of financial principles in making sound business decisions. The course includes a study of the allocation of financial resources, the effects of finance and credit institutions on the business community, and the impact of financial decisions on the consumer market. Current trends and issues will be researched, presented and discussed. Business ethics will be a strong focus presented in this course. In addition, students will research educational requirements, job qualifications and employment opportunities in finance. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a co-curricular student organization, will provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.

Students in Business Management will develop a foundation in the many activities, problems, and decisions that are intrinsic to the management of a successful business, as well as an appreciation for the importance of these responsibilities. In addition, students will plan, organize, manage, and operate a for-profit business! Areas to be examined include business organization, ethical and legal responsibilities, communication, decision-making, human resources, professional development and required post-secondary education. By gaining an understanding of these areas, students will be better prepared to enhance the business decisions of tomorrow. . Students will have the opportunity for job-shadows and internships. Qualified students will be eligible for a work-based learning opportunity, allowing them to earn an additional 1 to 2 credits. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a co-curricular student organization, will provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement
 
 
Course: Accounting I                              1 Term
Grades: 10, 11                                         1 Credit
Prerequisite: None
 
The primary focus of Accounting I is to learn the rules and procedures of accounting for profit-motivated businesses. Students will be introduced to the language of business and basic accounting principles. Students will complete an accounting cycle for a service business organized as a sole proprietorship. The course will integrate computer applications and electronic accounting to complete business simulations and present information. This course is highly recommended for students interested in business careers after high school, students majoring in business at a post-secondary institution, students interested in starting their own business, and students who want to understand financial information for their own personal use. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a co-curricular student organization, will provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.
 
 
Virtual Enterprise is the final capstone course in the Business Management program of study and will be offered 2010-2011.
 

2. Interactive Multimedia

This course is designed to develop computer technology skills using a variety of computer software and hardware tools and features. Students will explore the historical, social and ethical issues of using computer technology. A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and desktop publishing documents will be created that will result in designing a multimedia presentation. Students will create a portfolio and a variety of personal and professional documents. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a co-curricular student organization, will be offered to provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.
 
Course: Interactive Multimedia Presentations         1 Term

Keyboarding (high school credit)
 
In this course, the student will use a variety of interactive multimedia tools to develop several electronic presentations. Typography, layout, and design guidelines are applied in creating and formatting various presentations that use imported data/graphics, digital, audio, animated, and video clips. Students will create a portfolio and a variety of personal and professional documents. This course prepares students for advanced Word processing skills. Students will create visual presentations utilizing PowerPoint, and will generate brochures, newsletters, business forms and other desktop publishing publications.

American Business Legal Systems                       1 term

Are you curious about the law and how it affects you?  Come take a tour of the American legal system with American Business Legal Systems (Business Law).  Knowledge of business law is useful for all students, as students will assume roles as citizens, business owners, employees, and consumers in their communities and in society at large. American Business Legal Systems provides students with an understanding of the legal framework in which American business functions and also addresses statutes and regulations affecting businesses, families, and individuals in their related roles. In addition, students will evaluate the influence of the free enterprise system in a democratic society on daily decisions and analyze the alliance between capitalism and democracy. American Business Legal Systems will better prepare students to influence the future decisions in the public and private sectors of the United States of America.

The American economy is based on a private enterprise system in which the millions of individual choices made by consumers, workers, and citizens affect the decisions made by business owners and government officials. Students enrolled in Business Economics will gain a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual decision makers, both consumers and producers, within the larger economic system.Business Economics provides an in-depth study of fundamental concepts, free enterprise trading practices, and the various players in the economic system. Topics include the production, marketing and distribution of goods and services, as well as the roles of financial institutions, the government, and the individual within the free enterprise system. In addition, students will explore various careers related to the economy plus international trade and economics which have become an integral part of business economics.

Financial Planning and Accounting
 
Banking and Finance is the last course in the Financial Planning program of study and is designed to challenge the student with real banking and financial situations through a partnership with a local financial institution that would bring resources of mentors, seminars, and hands on experience with day-to-day operations. Completion of this course will provide students with a basis for secondary education in finance and special job skills in banking and financial institutions. Ethical issues will be presented in the course.
